Learn Some Basic Chords First

Learn the chords of A, D and E first. Study and look at the left hand finger shapes. Get a feel of guitar (finger) chords shapes early.

This is how we read a guitar chord diagram:-

picture

These are 3 of the easiest chords to hold and they are a set of chords in the key of A (you know when you karoake "the key is out la!"). The mother of all keys is C but we start with A first because easier to learn A's set of chords.

A being the key (there being only 7 alphabets used in music i.e A, B, C, D, E, F and G), A chord is like the master aka root chord or Chord I ; and D is Chord IV (A, B, C, D) and E is Chord V.

So this is a I-IV-V chord progression; some pointers (especailly if you are composing):-

1) songs usually starts and ends at chord I

2) Chord V to I has strong 'closure' (aka cadence) feeling

3) Chord IV to I can be closure but has prolong closure feeling. Try it, sing Auld Lang Syne end at Chord IV (hold and pause at Chord IV, drumroll and everybody has to hold with you).... before end at Chord I.

4) Standard rock and roll numbers are I-IV-V structures

So we will kick off with Queen's rock and roll number.. but with very slow and gentle strumming!

I Wanna Break Free by Queen (Verse only)
1) Slow version, strum slow!
2) Key A (Chords A, D, E)
3) There are 4 beats in one bar ||
4) All beats are played downwards stroke (strum) slowly.

Some things to keep in mind
1) watch left hand fingers when changing chords.
2) make sure minimal movement (no unnecessary movement) fingers to fingers.
3) left hand fingers not used (i.e not pressing on fretboard) naturally tend to stay up - keep them down!, ready to use.
4) Keep practising these 3 chords, and try different movement, sometimes from E to D, D to E, A, to E, etc.
